This early twentieth century postcard features the Beacon Hotel in Crowborough, East Sussex, a large and well-known hotel that once stood on one of the highest points in the area. Published by Stengel & Co. of Dresden-Berlin, the card reflects the high-quality printing and photographic style that made the company popular during the postcard boom of the early 1900s.

The postcard was posted in 1902 and has an undivided back, a format commonly used before message space was officially introduced on the reverse side of British postcards. Because of this, the sender has written across the front of the image itself, leaving only the address on the reverse.
The Beacon Hotel appears as an impressive Edwardian building surrounded by gardens and pathways, with a Union flag flying above the roofline. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Crowborough was becoming a popular destination for visitors seeking countryside scenery and cleaner air away from larger towns and cities.
The handwritten message on the front is dated September 19th 1902 and describes the weather turning cold overnight, mentioning that the sender “passed this hill this morning”. Messages like these provide a small but fascinating glimpse into everyday life and travel during the Edwardian period.
The Beacon Hotel itself became a much-loved part of Crowborough’s local history. With around 100 rooms and extensive views across the Sussex countryside, it operated for many years as a grand hotel and retreat for visitors. Sadly, the building was demolished in 1956, meaning postcards like this now serve as valuable visual records of a lost landmark.
