This early postcard shows Le Casino in Biskra, Algeria, surrounded by palms and gardens. Numbered 49, it carries the LL mark of the French postcard publisher Léon & Lévy.
The card was postally used in 1906 and sent from Algeria to Draguignan in southern France. An unusual feature is the postage stamp, which was attached to the picture side rather than the reverse.

Biskra and Le Casino
Biskra lies at the northern edge of the Sahara and became an important winter destination for European visitors during the French colonial period. Improved transport links helped develop tourism in the area, with visitors attracted by its oasis landscape, warm winter climate and thermal springs.
The Casino formed part of this developing tourist infrastructure. Historical research into tourism in the region records a casino at Biskra and notes that its administration was also operating cinema screenings by 1903.
The LL Postcard Mark
The LL initials printed beneath the photograph belonged to Léon & Lévy, a major French photographic and postcard publisher.
The company was established in Paris in 1864, initially producing photographic views. Its LL trademark was registered in 1901, when the business increasingly moved into illustrated postcard production. It became one of France’s largest postcard publishers.
That fits perfectly with the 1906 postal date on this example.
What Is a Biskra Le Casino Postcard Worth?
Early postcards of Biskra are collectible, particularly among collectors of Algerian, North African and French colonial postal history. Other original LL postcards of Biskra are currently offered by specialist dealers for around €3–€5, although subject, condition, postal history and scarcity all affect value.
For an original Le Casino example from around 1906 in good used condition, a reasonable retail value would be approximately £5–£10.
The intact stamp, clear postal history and unusual placement of the stamp on the picture side add interest to this particular example.
