Why Vintage Postcards Still Matter Today

Vintage postcards are more than just old pieces of paper. Many capture places, artwork, humour, and everyday moments that would otherwise have been forgotten over time. Even small details like handwritten messages, postmarks, or signs of wear help tell the story of where a postcard has been and who once owned it.

One of the things we enjoy most about collecting and selling vintage postcards is the variety. Some people are drawn to seaside scenes and old streets that have changed dramatically over the years, while others prefer illustrated animals, romance cards, military subjects, or comic postcards. There is always something different to discover.

We are especially interested in older postcards from recognised publishers and series, including Raphael Tuck & Sons, Valentine’s postcards, and De Reszke Cigarettes promotional cards. Many of these were produced during the early 1900s and are still admired today for their detailed artwork and quality printing. Some collectors search for specific publishers, while others simply buy postcards that appeal to them personally.

Vintage postcards are also one of the easier collectibles to start. They do not require a large budget or much storage space, and there is no right or wrong way to collect them. Some buyers focus on certain themes or locations, while others just enjoy owning a few interesting cards from the pas

Most of our postcards are listed individually rather than in fixed bundles. This gives buyers the freedom to choose the cards that interest them most and build their own collections over time. It also helps collectors who may already own part of a series and are searching for specific postcards to complete it.

Many of the postcards featured on Postcard Attic are either currently available or previously sold examples from our collection. Alongside the postcards themselves, we enjoy researching the publishers, postmarks, artwork styles, and history behind them. Even simple postcards can sometimes reveal interesting details about the time period they came from.

Condition is always considered when sourcing vintage postcards, although age-related wear is often part of their appeal. Some collectors look for excellent condition examples, while others are more interested in rarity, subject matter, or postal history. We aim to photograph and describe postcards clearly so buyers can see the genuine condition of each card.

We currently sell our postcards through our Vinted shop, where buyers can browse available cards, combine purchases, and build personalised bundles. Keeping vintage postcards separate from our newer gift and homeware website allows Postcard Attic to focus entirely on postcard collecting and postal history.

Vintage postcards have remained collectable for generations because they are affordable, easy to store, and full of character. Whether someone collects seriously, enjoys local history, or simply likes the artwork and nostalgia, there is still something special about holding a postcard that has survived for more than 100 years.
